Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria
Rema is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and rapper from Benin City, Edo State, known for his distinctive fusion of Afrobeats, Afro-Pop, hip-hop and global pop influences. Born Divine Ikubor, he emerged as one of the leading voices of a new generation of Nigerian artists after gaining attention through viral freestyles and signing with Mavin Records in 2019. Rema broke through internationally with his self-titled debut EP, which featured songs including “Dumebi” and “Iron Man.” His distinctive vocal style and experimental approach to Afrobeats helped shape a sound he has described as Afrorave, blending African rhythms with influences from pop, trap and other contemporary genres. In 2022, Rema released his debut studio album, *Rave & Roses*, featuring the global hit “Calm Down.” The song became an international success, while its remix featuring Selena Gomez expanded its reach around the world and became one of the biggest crossover records associated with Afrobeats. Rema followed with his second studio album, *HEIS*, in 2024. The project further developed his Afrorave sound through songs including “Benin Boys,” “HEHEHE” and “OZEBA,” reinforcing his reputation for experimenting with the boundaries of contemporary African pop music. With a catalogue spanning major releases such as “Dumebi,” “Calm Down,” “Charm,” “Soundgasm” and “OZEBA,” Rema has grown from a breakout Nigerian artist into one of the internationally recognised figures of modern Afrobeats.
